Praised for his “clarion tone” (Ludwig van Toronto) and “impressive vocal colour” (Opera Canada), Canadian-American baritone Geoffrey Schellenberg joins Opéra de Montréal’s Atelier Lyrique for the 2020-21 season. He recently completed his second year as a Resident Artist with Portland Opera where he performed the roles of Ben in The Telephone, David in A Hand of Bridge, and Doctor Gregg in Gallantry. He previously appeared in several other roles in Portland, including Nardo in La finta giardiniera, Fiorello in Il barbiere di Siviglia, and Marchese D’Obigny in La traviata. Prior to this residency, Geoffrey was an Emerging Artist with Calgary Opera for the 2017-18 season, performing as the Sergeant in Il barbiere di Siviglia, Captain in Eugene Onegin, and Sciarrone in Tosca. Geoffrey is scheduled to appear as Bartley in Opéra de Montréal’s upcoming production of Riders to the Sea (Vaughan-Williams) and the title role in Don Giovanni with Highlands Opera Studio in August 2021.

Geoffrey has become a frequent performer around Vancouver, British Columbia, recently appearing as Schaunard in Vancouver Opera’s La boheme. He also performed as Amantio di Nicolao in Pacific Opera Victoria’s Il trittico, Marcello in White Rock Concerts’ La bohème, and Morales in Opera Kelowna’s Carmen. He has sung as a soloist with the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra, both as Captain in a concert performance of Candide and as Danilo in selections from The Merry Widow in their The Look of Love concert, and was the baritone soloist in the New Works Project for the inaugural Vancouver Opera Festival.

He is also regularly engaged with Burnaby Lyric Opera (BC), having performed as Belcore and Peter in their concert performances of L’elisir d’amore and Hansel and Gretel.

Additionally, he has sung as soloist in several oratorio concerts, including the Vancouver Bach Choir’s performances of A Sea Symphony (Vaughan-Williams) and Requiem (Fauré), as well as Requiem (Duruflé) with St. Philips Choir and Wenceslas (Chilcott) with Jubilate Vocal Ensemble.
